An Alternative Approach for Constraining 3D‐Displacements With InSAR, Applied to a Fault‐Bounded Groundwater Entrainment Field in California

We explore the use of elastic Green’s functions in inversions one-dimensional Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) observations to recover three-dimensional displacement fields. This approach enforces coupling horizontal displacements and limits need for prior assumptions about subsurface sources, driving deformation or explicit damping a given dimension full 3D field. apply these methods data from Coachella Valley, California, where artificial groundwater recharge 2017 associated increases pore pressure resulted ground up 12 cm. area is covered by Sentinel-1a/b two overlapping paths both ascending descending orbits, as well an east-west flight line Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle (UAVSAR), providing five unique line-of-sight geometries. The regularization approaches applied Sentinel alone agree most respects, with elastically coupled producing slightly better fit independent UAVSAR observations. Our results suggest that entrainment Valley likely significant led contraction across fault bounding northern side basin, right-lateral sense strain some areas along fault.
